Contemporary Glass: Exhibitions, Collection, and Funding
In recent years, glass as a medium in art has developed into an interesting field. Sculptures with ambiguous messages replace applied forms such as vases and bowls. Artists take up subtle, abstract, or transcendent themes, which are difficult to express with other materials. In Germany, artists have few forums and the public hardly any possibility to get to know this field of art. One of the foundation's goals is to enlarge the circle of contemporary glass experts. To this end, the foundation regularly shows exhibits of contemporary sculptures of glass, continues to expand its top-class collection of international works, and supports the training and further education of artists who work with glass.
Since 2008, the foundation also focuses on modern photography.
Engineering Sciences and Interdisciplinary Projects
In this field, the foundation is interested in particular interdisciplinary projects and in research in engineering sciences, especially in the areas of glass, ceramics, stone, and earths. Although these subjects lay the foundation for other branches of the engineering sciences, they are being more and more neglected in research funding and are in danger of being marginalized at the technological universities. To counter this trend and to make these branches of the engineering sciences more attractive to students, the foundation supports projects in applied and pure research.
