The catalogue's numerous photographs and texts document the first phase of contemporary art with glass in China. In her introduction, Eva-Maria Fahrner-Tutsek portrays the historical and cultural change in China and the resulting search for a new cultural identity. Susanne K. Frantz describes the origins and the exciting development of artistic work with glass at the art academies in Beijing and Shanghai. Starting with China's historical roots, the artist Xue Lu explains the typical characteristics of Chinese art with glass. Katharina Sykora conveys in her essay the philosophical background of the photographs 'Hinter Glas', which Ulrike Ottinger created in China.
